Classic style cafes always have an irresistible attraction for young people. Having a cup of coffee in these places, you will have the feeling of going back in time, reviving the old years, when the little boys and girls ran around the porch. According to my experiences, the atmosphere in those five retro cafe shops that I visited has a mix between classic and the modern that gives you a unique emotion as coffeeholic Saigonese.  Here is a top 5 that I recommend you should go and visit if you have time to travel around Saigon.

Cửa hàng cafe 81

Location: 216B, Nguyễn Văn Nguyễn St, District 1, HCMC

81 Cafe will bring you a life in a vintage atmosphere, where you can find the old corners of Saigon. Come here, you not only could see and touch the old objects like the former Soviet sewing machine, silver leaf-leaf frames, iron table fan, etc. in the time of War but also you could hear and feel the peaceful space from the old little things that bring up to you.

Saigon Retro Cafe

Location: 1st floor, 55 Trần Quốc Toản St, Ward 8, District 3, HCMC

Inspired by the time 1965s, the image of Saigon at that time was so peaceful and balance. The owner is a Saigonese, and his family also are originally from Saigon. With him, the best moment that he remembers is the time when he saw intellectual families that lived in Saigon in 1965s. Thus, it becomes a motivation for him to recreate the living room of intelligent families at that time.

Lão Hạc – Beer & Cafe

Location: 214/19A Nguyễn Văn Nguyễn St, Tân Định Ward, District 1, HCMC

If you are as a retro cafe lover, definitely you should come here while you are visiting Saigon. This cafe store has two floors, which are mainly decorated with wooden materials. In particular, the restaurant often opens Trinh music, mixing with the peace, creating a delightful space. Thus, it literally has a space for you and your friends sharing stories or hang out and drink some beers/cafe as your preferred.

Út Lành Cafe

Location: 283/37 Phạm Ngũ Lão St, Nguyễn Thái Bình Ward, District 1, HCMC

Located at the alley of Phạm Ngũ Lão street, right next to the Bùi Viện St – a pedestrian street for foreigners, the cafe shop will bring you the quiet feeling at the first step you come to cafe shop though.  To keep the space and the vintage charisma of the store, there is no air conditioner, wifi, no expensive/luxury interiors, just only has the old things like boards and antic furniture. The store up to now still keeps the architecture of an old-style house, from the old sofa to the old TV cabinet. The music plays songs about Hanoi from the cassette machine, upstairs is a desk, next to the bed old.

Tiệm Cafe Hoa Giấy

Location:19 Huỳnh Tịnh Của St, Ward 8, District 3, HCMC

Humble located at Ho Chi Minh’s Huynh Tinh Street, Hoa Giay Cafe attracts people with its simple appearance, but the most notable is probably the yellow colour of the walls, and the Colorful lanterns bring a sense of modernity but still exist somewhere a genuinely ancient and romantic Hoi An.

Without any big signs, fancy decoration and flashing lights, the store only attracts you by its unique design and luxurious tables and chairs with ancient features of the yellow walls and blue iron window pane.


Overall, com to Saigon, the characteristics in here is the coffee shops that have and maintain the ancient corners of the 1960s, 1970s in the modern lives. As a traveller also a Saigonese, I hope that one day, you could travel in here and explore the top 5 recommend coffee shops that I described above.  Though in Saigon, there are still many vintage coffee shops that need to figure out to see that the beauty of Saigon in the old times.
